Alan Mathison Turing OBE FRS

It is estimated that Bletchley codebreakers shortened WW2 by

 as much as two to four years, saving many thousands of lives!

Mathematical genius who studied at both Cambridge and Princeton universities. In 1936, he laid the foundation for modern computing science; during WW2, he played a crucial role in cracking Germany's complex military codes; and in 1950, he laid the foundation for artificial intelligence. His ideas are still inspiring our world today.

 

After a posthumous royal pardon in 2013, he became the first gay man to be  featured on a Bank of England note. His idea of a 'Universal Machine' was voted the greatest British innovation of the 20th century.
