5th to 11th Century European Settlers
The arrival and settlement
of the Anglo‑Saxons
Groups of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes crossed the North Sea from what is now Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Together known as the Anglo‑Saxons, they settled along Britain’s shores, founded new communities, and established early kingdoms such as Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria - the foundations of the England that would emerge in later centuries.
