How Anglo‑Saxon Law
shaped the Magna Carta.
Anglo‑Saxon law helped shape the principles that later appeared in the Magna Carta, especially ideas about the king being bound by law and the rights of free people. These early traditions of justice, oaths, and communal decision‑making laid the groundwork for the more formal protections written into the Magna Carta centuries later.
There are only four surviving originals from the moment Magna Carta was first issued in June 1215 and they are held at the British Library in London (two copies), Lincoln Cathedral, and Salisbury Cathedral.
