Lieutenants Bromhead and Chard took charge of the outpost defence, overseeing the fortification efforts before leading their men in a determined defence throughout the night. As the battle raged, the Zulus eventually withdrew. In recognition of their exceptional bravery under arduous conditions, Bromhead, Chard, and nine of their fellow soldiers were later honoured with the Victoria Cross.
