Robert Bamford, 30-year-old engineer and Lionel Martin, 35-year-old old Etonian with a nous for self- marketing, shared a passion for anything on four wheels and a good turn of speed. They met at the Bath Road Cycling Club and started selling Singer sports cars together. Bamford thought he could improve the Singer and soon began to build cars. They became Bamford and Martin in 1912 and
12 months later changed their name to Aston Martin, from Martin's expoits at the Aston Clinton hill climb in Bucks.
