The legal charter reluctantly agreed by King John included a clause setting out fixed measures for ale. In a forerunner to present day weights and measures legislation, Magna Carta stated:

 “Let there be throughout our kingdom a single measure

for wine and a single measure for ale and a single measure

for corn, namely 'the London quarter'.”

In medieval times a standard measure of beer was the equivalent of

2 pints (the London quarter)

....so we've reduced our drinking a bit!
