Popularly known as the 'Iron Lady' of Pakistan, Benazir opened the doors of politics for Muslim women. Not only did she succeed her father as head of the PPP, but she went on to become the first and remains the only democratically elected female Prime Minister of Pakistan, 1988-1990 and 1993-1996, ending early amid charges of corruption. She then spent 8 years in exile in London, returning home in 2007 to stand in the 2008 general election.

On December 27, 2007 she was shot by an assassin at a political rally in Rawalpindi, he then blew himself up killing 28 and injuring at another 100. Ironically, it was the city where her father was hanged in 1979.
