Queen Boudica

(also known as Boadicea)

"I am fighting as an ordinary person for my lost freedom, my bruised body, and my outraged daughters"

An iconic symbol not only of British freedom but also of women's power, Boudica ruled the Iceni tribe of East Anglia. The Romans not content with seizing Iceni property and land, they publicly flogged Boudica and raped her daughters. Enraged, she united warring tribes and led them in revolt against the Romans that resulted in the destruction of at least 2 settlements and almost drove the empire off the island. While the revolt failed, the Iceni Queen became a  modern-day heroine.

She unleashed her fury, "In stature she was very tall, in appearance most terrifying, in the glance of her eye most fierce"  Owen Jarus
