His inspiration struck when driving home from the Old Dolphin Public House in Halifax on a foggy night.  He saw the reflection of his headlights in the eyes of a cat sitting by the road.  But it could have been the reflection of tram-lines!  Cat's eyes were voted the greatest invention of the 20th century.
