Calcutta was the capital of India during the

British Raj until December 1911.

Calcutta was located on the coast, Delhi is in the centre of Northern India. The British Government felt that it would be easier to administer from the centre instead of the coast.

The Secretariat Building in Delhi houses Ministries of Defence, Finance, Home Affairs

and External Affairs. It also houses the Prime Minister's office.
