First discovered in 1869 by Swiss Physician, Friedrick Miescher,

called 'nuclein', later called 'nucleic acid', today known as DNA.

DNA fingerprinting has revolutionised crime scene investigations,

has led to the convictions of murderers and rapists, freed many

innocent victims, transformed immigration disputes and paternity

cases. Colin Pitchfork a brutal child killer was the first murder

conviction, Richard Buckland a local 17 year old youth with learning

difficulties was the first exonerated victim, and the first identity case

was a boy whose family came from Ghana - DNA was born!

Alec Jeffreys was Awarded the

Albert Einstein World Award for Science in 1996.
