In 1964, Campbell set a double world record. He became the first man to break the world land and water speed records in the same year, a record that still stands today. He died attempting a new world water speed record on Coniston Water, England, 1967.

It is said Campbell was a restless man and seemed driven to emulate, if not surpass, his father's achievements.

In 2001, DNA  confirmed the human remains recovered from the bottom of Coniston Water to be those of powerboat legend Donald Campbell!
