In 1936, the charismatic new King, Edward VIII, announced his intention of marrying the twice-divorced American socialite, Wallis Simpson. Not since Henry VIII resolved to marry Anne Boleyn had a royal marriage threatened to wreak such havoc on the country. Henry was able to force his will on the kingdom. 400 years on, Edward found his personal desires no match for Parliament and abdicated. He and Wallis lived the rest of their days together, in self-imposed exile, in Europe.

Edward asked Lord Kitchener, Secretary of War, if he could serve in France, during WWI. When Kitchener refused, Edward commented that it did not matter if he was killed as he had four brothers. Kitchener replied that he was more concerned about the future King being captured by the German Army and then being used as a pawn in future peace negotiations.
