The Hawker Siddeley Harrier was the first vertical/short take off and landing (V/STOL) aircraft to go into service. It combined the best aspects of a helicopter with those of a fighter jet. Its versatility included flying from airfields on land or from the decks of Royal Navy aircraft carriers at sea.
