The first metallic hip replacement was performed in 1940 by American Surgeon, Austin Moore, at Columbia Hospital.
In 1962, 22 years later, John Charnley performed the first successful hip replacement operation, using a femoral stem and ball made of Steel and a hip socket made of Teflon, glued together using Acrylic Bone Cement. He is recognised as the founder of modern hip replacement.
KEY DATES
In 1938, London surgeon Phillip Wiles performed the first successful total-hip replacement, using a stainless steel joint that was attached to bone with bolts and screws.

Professor Sir John Charnley was a British orthopaedic surgeon, inventor and skilled craftsman. He is best known for
his development of the first truly successful operation for total arthroplasty of the hip first performed in 1962.
