The pandemic that spread to Britain towards the end of World War I

Dr James Niven

One of the most remarkable Medical Health Officers

in British history, the original Chris Whitty.

In 1918, one of history's worst pandemics was sweeping the globe.

Niven's simple life-saving medical advice: close down society as much

as possible to stop the spread of the disease...stay home. As a result,

Manchester recorded fewer deaths than in any other UK city.

Nearing the end of WWI, Prime Minister, Lloyd George, visited

Manchester to receive the Freedom of the City. Shock, horror!

He contracted Spanish Flu. It was 'touch and go'. He survived.
But over 250,000 Britons and millions worldwide were not so lucky.

Niven's advice remained our best weapon in the fight

against infectious diseases...for over a century!
