giant fireball crashed in a field in Cuffley, Herts.
On take off that night, little did he know that over the next few hours his actions would cause German air raids to falter, boost the morale of a nation and make him at national hero...at 21 years old.
First pilot to shoot down a German airship over Britain; First recipient of the VC for action in Britain; First VC for the Royal Flying Corps.
Sadly he was shot down in 1917. Held in a POW camp. Following Armistice, having survived the war, he died of Spanish Flu in 1918...at 23 years old.
