That changed the world

David Lloyd George

Prime Minister 1916-1922

British statesman and Prime Minister of the Liberal-led wartime

coalition at the height of WWI. He was the first Welshman and the

last Liberal politician to serve as Prime Minister. A renowned orator

and gifted negotiator, he earned the nickname 'the Welsh wizard'

for his ability to manipulate the political system.

Awarded the Order of Merit by King George V in 1919

for leading the nation during WWI and securing peace. Earning the epitaph: The Man Who Won the War.

He never forgot his humble roots, as Chancellor he presented the

People's Budget (1909) which declared war on poverty. It remains

one of the most radical ever. It delivered a welfare state for the poor

by boldly taxing the rich. Old age pensions with social security for the

sick and unemployed were paid for the first time. Hundreds of

thousands of citizens blessed the name of Lloyd George.

"You cannot feed the hungry on statistics." Lloyd George.
