Sealed in 1215 to restore peace between an unpopular King John and a group of rebel barons. It literally means 'The Great Charter' and is the cornerstone of English freedoms and liberties, and the foundation of English democracy. The Magna Carta remains a cherished, hugely influential and widely admired document.
