An iconic symbol of liberty with a simple goatee, in a white robe, with a stick. He inspired the civil rights movement in America, Mandela's fight against apartheid in South Africa and was a true visionary.

He mobilised masses of people in non-violent disobedience acts of resistance, including boycotts, protests and fastings. One of his most famous being the Salt march.

After 33 years of peaceful protests, on August 15, 1947 India gained independence from colonial rule.

Some 6 months later, Ghandhi was killed at a prayer meeting by a fanatic. He inspired the imagination of the world.
