Newton Heath LYR FC had the nickname "The Heathens". This is often cited as the origin of "The Red Devils" when they changed to Manchester United.

The name was adopted by Matt Busby from the red shirted Salford Rugby League Team.They were nicknamed "The Red Devils" and with United
formally training in Salford the nickname transferred over.

Manchester United were the first team in England to play football on a Sunday which a was very religious day, hence the devil name for playing on a sunday, and of course red was colour of the strip they wore.
