In 1866, Allbutt invented the Clinical Thermometer. A portable 6 inch device that was able to record a patient's temperature in 5 minutes, a welcome alternative to the standard foot-long model that required 20 minutes.

It soon became an indispensable diagnostic aid, on a par with the doctor's stethoscope.
