King George I became the first Hanoverian ruler of Great Britain in 1714 thanks to Queen Anne, who

had no children. George was Anne's nearest Protestant relative. The House of Hanover secured its

position as the new ruling family by defeating several Jacobite rebellions which supported the old

Stuart line.
