Edward VIII became King of the United Kingdom following the death of his father, George V, but ruledfor less than a year. He sparked a constitutional crisis when he chose to marry a twice-divorced

American, Wallis Simpson and then abdicated. He and Wallis lived the rest of their days together in

self-imposed exile, in France.
