Nicknamed 'Monty' by his men and considered difficult and egotistical by his peers!

Appointed commander of the British 8th Army in the Western Desert by Churchill (1942). He pushed  Rommel's army all the way to Tunisia, a decisive victory, he led the 8th Army in Sicily and Italy (1943), and joined the American Generals to plan the Allied invasion of Normandy (1944).

US General Eisenhower then took over. Monty bitterly resented this, though he was promoted to Field Marshal by way of compensation. His arrogance made him increasingly unpopular, particularly with the Americans.
