She heard her first call at the age of 12, on an annual pilgrimage to the Church of the Black Madonna, nestling in the mountains of Kosovo, to a religious life. 6 months later, she set off for Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. Here, she took the name Sister Mary Teresa, was sent to Calcutta and assigned to teach, becoming Mother Teresa on her final vows. In 1946, she heard her second call, on a train journey from Calcutta to the Himalayan foothills for a retreat, giving rise to the Missionaries of Charity.

She stands out as one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century. Combining heartfelt empathy with incredible organisational and managerial skills that allowed her to develop a vast international organisation of missionaries, to help impoverished citizens all across the world. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2003, beatified as 'Blessed Teresa of Calcutta'. In 2015, Pope Francis issued a decree to declare her a saint at the Vatican on September 4, 2016.
