1066, Christmas Day, William was crowned the first Norman king of England, in Westminster Abbey. The battle of Hastings was
close-fought: three of William's horses were killed from under him and Harold was killed. Hit by an arrow and then mowed down by the sword of a mounted knight. The Norman Conquest was the last successful foreign invasion of England and led to many changes.
'A bloody fight that changed the English language'.
The Bayeux tapestry is one of the world's most famous pieces of medieval art. It is a linen embroidery that tells the tale of William the Conqueror and Harold, Earl of Wessex, the men who led the Norman and Anglo-Saxon armies in 1066. William's victory at the Battle of Hastings ensured the success of the Norman invasion of England.
