That changed the world
Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan
(1897-1960)
Nye Bevan began work at Ty Trist Colliery in Tredegar at the age of 13. Despite his childhood stammer, little formal education, and working class roots, he rose to become the voice of Welsh miners, a Labour MP, and visionary Minister for Health who spearheaded the creation of the NHS.
During long periods of unemployment, Bevan immersed himself in
reading and political debate, sharpening his resolve to adopt Tredegar’s
worker-funded healthcare scheme as the blueprint for the creation of the National Health Service in 1948.
“We will Tredegarise you” when shaping the NHS. Bevan declared.
