He married Constance Mundy in December 1832, and in the same year was elected MP for Chippenham.

He took his new wife on holiday to Lake Como, Italy in 1833. That's where he conceived his idea of capturing and retaining images on light sensitive paper that would make sketches for him automatically. On his return home to Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire, he got started on this project.
