"...It seems inconceivable that those who made such sacrifices during the war that you, as their King, refused a lesser sacrifice." Queen Mary on the abdication of her son Edward VIII

Like Queen Victoria and Elizabeth I, Elizabeth II had not been raised to reign and became heir at 10 years old by default on the abdication of Edward VIII, her uncle. Edward VIII gave up the crown to marry Wallis Simpson, pitching Prince Albert of York, his brother, into the role of monarch, later known as King George VI.

Since her accession in 1952, Elizabeth II has been Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and Head of the Commonwealth. She is also Queen of 12 countries that have become independent since her accession.

Known for her sense of duty and devotion to a life of service, she has reigned longer than any other monarch in British history, surpassing the 63 year reign of Queen Victoria, her great great grandmother. She has been served by no less than 12 British prime ministers currently, starting with wartime leader Winston Churchill, who was her mentor. She is a much loved and respected figure across the globe and living proof that a woman can do the job as well as a man. A truly remarkable lady!
