Mahatma Gandhi had been a leader of the Indian nationalist movement in South Africa, and had been a vocal opponent of basic discrimination and abusive labour treatment as well as suppressive police control. In India Gandhi was the leader of the independence movement against British rule. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence in 1947 and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
