The Bismarck sunk HMS Hood and then raced for France, hounded by aircraft launched from HMS Ark Royal. In the last attack before she reached safety, a torpedo launched from a Swordfish bomber struck her stern, jamming the rudders. She could only steam in circles until she sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
