Battle of the

River Lea, 895

Battle of Sluys,

1340

The founders of the English nation were a maritime people. Before they settled in the English Isles they had to dare the dangers of the high seas. Nearly 400 years later, they had effected a settlement of their own differences, united the country under one crown, and then they had to grapple with unwelcomed invaders. The Danes arrived like locusts devouring the fruits of the land and reducing people to a state of despairing exhaustion and servitude.
