Admiral Shovell
"Shipwrecks are treasure troves of the past, revealing
remarkable stories of heroism and tragedy."
MM
"A disastrous end, that would inspire the 1714 Longitude
Act and the birth of the Lloyds Register."
MM
Heading towards Plymouth, the admiral's warships were driven off course by ferocious westerly winds and a strong northern current. They crashed and slammed on the rocks and reefs of the Scilly Isles in pitch darkness. More than 1,500 men drowned and 4 warships sank, including Shovell's flagship, the Association. Remembered as one of the worst maritime disasters in British history.
MM
"A disaster that changed the course of
Maritme History forever!"
