Shakespeare's birthplace Stratford - upon - Avon
In 1844 American circus showman, P. T. Barnum, visited William Shakespeare's Birthplace, he liked it so much that he proposed a plan to take it down brick by brick and move it to America! A public campaign was launched to purchase the property for the nation, the Shakespeare Birthday Committee was formed and donors including Charles Dickens helped to raise £3,000. In 1847, following the purchase of Shakespeare's birthplace, the Birthday Committee was incorporated by a private act of Parliament, and became the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Today, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust continues to care for the world's greatest Shakespeare heritage sites in Stratford-upon-Avon, and promotes the enjoyment and understanding of his works, life and times all over the world.
