During WWI he mobilised feuding Arab tribes into a formidable guerrilla army to topple the ruling Ottoman Empire. Disheartened by the Arab
sell-out at Versailles, he refused honours to be bestowed on him by King George V. In 1921, Churchill, then Colonial Secretary, asked Lawrence to help him draft a Middle East settlement. He resigned from office in 1922, feeling that he had betrayed the Arab cause.
