43 - 410 Epic Empire Builders
Emperor Claudius
...the scarlet cloaks of his legions spread
across the land like blood.
43AD, Claudius sent approximately 40,000 legionaries across the sea to Britain, a century after Caesar, but this time failure wasn't an option. Landing on beaches in Kent, they battled warring tribes, stormed through hill-forts, and chopped down anyone who got in their way. Claudius entered Colchester in triumph, returned to Rome a hero, and became the most powerful man in the world until his death, 54AD.
The Romans introduced everything from building roads, towns and cities to introducing sanitation, language, education and currency, and of course HADRIAN'S WALL. Perhaps the greatest legacy is that every generation since, be it Saxons, Normans or Victorians, have tried to regain the glory of when Britannia was part of a grand civilisation.
They came, they conquered and after 400
years...left Britain facing its first Brexit.
