British Merchant Peter Durand received a patent from King George III for the idea of preserving food in cans made of iron and tin. Combined with French inventor Nicolas Appert's glass sterilisation method, long term canned food preservation became possible.

Early cans were so thick it took a hammer and chisel to open them, the tin opener was not invented until 1858 by Ezra J Warner.
