He left money for an elaborate funeral and a monument to be built in his memory. A marble statue, sculpted by Patrick MacDowell, now stands in the nave of St Paul's Cathedral.

He is buried alongside Sir Joshua Rynolds and Sir Thomas Lawrence, who he called his 'Brothers in Art'.
