"People used me to achieve something.

I was just doing my job"

During WWII her voice inspired the nation. In 1938 she made her first broadcast with the Joe Loss Orchestra. For the next half century she toured the world, made TV and radio shows and worked tirelessly for charities. To her audience, she was the 'girl next door' type, reminding those away at war of their loved ones back home. In 1975 she was made a Dame and 10 years later awarded the Burma Star. Her last public performance was in 1995 at Buckingham Palace, commemorating the 50th anniversary of VE Day. Her signature songs were "We'll Meet Again" and "White Cliffs of Dover".
