8th to 11th Century Scandinavian Raiders
Longships
g
The Viking longships were powerful naval weapons. There shallow draft allowed navigation in waters only one metre deep and which allowed beach landings, while its light weight enabled it to be carried over land or used upside down for shelter in camps. Longships were also double ended which allowed the ship to reverse direction quickly without having to turn around
g
While longships were used by the Vikings in warfare, they were mostly used as troop transports, not warships. In the 10th century, longships would sometimes be tied together in offshore battles to form a steady platform for infantry warfare.
g
The longship was a master of all trades. It was wide and stable, yet light, fast, and nimble. These qualities combined in one ship meant the longship was unrivalled for centuries.
