World War 2, began in Europe on 1 September when Germany invaded Poland. Britain and France responded by declaring war on Germany on 3 September. It spread to the Soviet Union, China, Japan and the United States. Cities were destroyed by air raids, the atom bomb was dropped on Japan and six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust.
